Engwe P20 Review

Price: £999.00

Weight/Frame

Its approximate weight of 18.4 kg (without the battery) is a pleasant surprise, and the use of 6061 aluminum speaks volumes about its sturdiness and portability.

With a wide handlebar and an adjustable seat, even taller riders can find comfort. The cabling neatly tucked within the tubes offers an extra shield from the rain, much like a cyclist's hidden secret.

That said, it's worth noting that the folding mechanism, although quick, can be awkward. When folded, the handlebars sometimes end up in an awkward position, complicating the process of securing the bike. This can be particularly frustrating if you’re looking for quick and smooth transitions between riding and carrying the bike.

Nonetheless, if you run out of battery power, its lightweight promises ease in pedaling home.

Battery

The heart of any e-bike is its battery, and the P20 is no slouch with a 36V 9.6Ah lithium-ion powerhouse. Offering up to 100 km ranges says a lot, yet we all know that some promises are best taken with a pinch of salt.

As we pedaled through the city, it became evident that factors like route, riding style, and even wind resistance can alter that range. Sticking to Mode 3 consistently, we found a range closer to 45-50 km—a respectable figure for urban warriors darting across town.

It charges in about five hours, making overnight top-ups perfect for another day on the go.

Motor

A 250W brushless rear hub motor with 42Nm torque might not set your heart racing, but it does deliver steady power for city commutes. It’s capable of achieving speeds up to 25 km/h, allowing you to cruise through the concrete jungle with ease.

However, steep hills present a challenge; expect to put in extra pedal work when confronted with these urban foes.

Display and Controls

Simple often means effective, and the P20’s display reflects this philosophy by showcasing essential metrics such as speed and battery levels.

We did note pedal assist delays, especially from a standstill, which could be a minor annoyance in stop-and-go traffic. While the indicators add a layer of modernity, their visibility during daylight hours could see enhancements.

Riders may want to employ good old-fashioned hand signals for now.

Suspension Systems

Here’s where compromise lights up the stage.

The P20 opts for a rigid suspension system, resulting in some teeth-gritting moments on uneven paths. The trade-off? A lightweight profile that’s a dream for those prioritizing portability.

Over smoother city roads, it’s hardly an issue, but venture onto rougher paths, and the lack of cushioning becomes noteworthy.

Wheels / Tires

Fitted with Kenda K-shield 20 x 1.95 tires, they offer reliable traction, instilling confidence as you navigate bustling city streets. We found the grip remarkably solid for typical urban terrain, ensuring a smooth and dependable ride.

However, if your journey veers onto rugged trails, it might be wise to plan alternate routes. We recommend sticking to smoother pavements to fully enjoy the P20’s intended ride quality.

Brakes

The hydraulic disc brakes on the P20 are your silent partners in the chaotic dance of urban commuting.

When we took the bike through the city's unpredictable stop-and-go rhythm, these brakes responded with precision and grace.

They offer peace of mind, remaining whisper-quiet yet powerfully efficient, ensuring every sudden stop feels just as smooth and controlled as the ride itself.

Drivetrain

The Engwe P20 sports a single-speed carbon belt drive, promising a sleek, low-maintenance ride that's perfect for city bikers.

Unlike greasy chain systems, this setup stays pristine, sparing your work attire from oil stains. Impressively, the belt is maintenance-free for up to 33,000 km, cutting down waste and conserving resources over its lifespan.

While the single gear might limit you on varied terrains, it perfectly complements urban streets, aligning with the P20’s minimalistic and efficient design.

Price

With a price tag around £999.00, the Engwe P20 presents itself as an appealing option in the budget e-bike category.

It delivers competitive features without straining the wallet, an attractive proposition for those new to the e-bike world or looking to switch without substantial financial commitment.

Given the price, some compromises in features are to be expected, yet it still manages to offer a good balance between cost and functionality.
